The Now Sound is taken from an ancient Hindu text. Will these Hindu religious beliefs compromise my religious practice or understanding?
Hinduism is arguably not a religion but a philosophy. The philosophy of the Now Sound believes there is an energy that dwells within you as you. This energy has been given many names: the Holy Spirit, the Great Spirit, the Self, or as I like to call It, Being. All the petty differences such as nations, creeds, religions, languages and politics are man-made. Being is above all these differences. All of us, being divine in our innermost nature, should be able to rise above them and love the entire universe as the creation of the One.
No matter what your religious belief is, you are breathing. To honor this natural state is what The Now Sound is all about. Therefore, the Now Sound does not supersede or compromise any religion.
When I practice the Now Sound, I find myself going to sleep. Am I doing something wrong?
It is natural to feel the sensation of sleep during the Now Sound. Physiologically, your brain waves are slowing down closer to the cycles per second associated with sleep. This is a form of Yoga Nidra, the Yoga of sleep.
If you do not do the Now Sound any other time, you should do it just before sleep. One of two things will happen: either you will fall asleep (throw away the sleeping pills) or you will stay in concentrated relaxation.
How many breaths do you “watch” every day with the Now Sound?
I put all of my love and attention to around 400 breaths a day. I normally do 10 reps or so of 40 breaths. I don’t count the breaths, but find between 2 to 3 minutes is the duration that works for me. If this sounds like a lot, keep in mind we breathe 21,600 breaths a day. Twenty minutes is not much time to find peace every day.
When is the best time to do the Now Sound?
I never miss an opportunity to watch the breath during a shower. Instead of letting my mind go to what I should have done earlier or what I am going to do after the shower, I stay focused on the warm water and the bliss of the shower with all my senses.
Waiting rooms are great. The Now Sound makes takeoffs and landings less stressful. When I feel destructive stress (i.e. pain), I immediately “watch” breaths until the pain subsides.
I also love to watch the Now Sound just before I eat or drink anything. It is a great way to honor those who have prepared the food, the food itself and everyone around me.
Do I have to be in a quiet place to practice The Now Sound?
No, I have shared this technique in bars, restaurants and taxi cabs. However, why not seek a little silence? Turn off the iPod, television, mobile phone for a few minutes and feel the space between the breaths. We live in a world of noise. We have the ability to turn it off and find our own inner bliss.
